Author Guidelines

The field of research covered in the journal is Paleo-Hispanic studies broadly conceived, that is the collection of academic specialties concerned with ancient Hispanic peoples. These include the following academic disciplines: archeology, epigraphy, numismatics, history, philology, linguistics as well as any other field that has a bearing on relevant questions. Submissions can take the following forms:

  1. Articles
  2. Notes about new inscriptions
  3. Chronicae epigraphicae

 

Length and format 

Contributions should be submitted electronically and not in hard copy. It is recommended that manuscripts do not exceed 90.000 characters including spaces and references. This limit can only be exceeded when the committee has judged that a certain topic justifies additional space. In such circumstances and if it is deemed appropriate, the journal reserves the right to publish a work serially.

Contributors should use Times New Roman font (11-point in the main text and 9-point in footnotes). For characters that are not used in the journal’s approved languages (i.e. in phonetic-phonological or epigraphic transcriptions), authors should consult with the journal’s editorial secretary. In any case, Unicode should always be used. For classical Greek, Gentium Alt is recommended.

 

Language

Contributions are published in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, English and German. In rare cases due to a contribution’s scholarly importance, manuscripts written in other languages will be considered, if the author has been unable to write a contribution in one of the abovementioned languages.

 

Information about the author

The author’s personal information (name, surname, e-mail, home institution, etc.) should only appear in the relevant section of the OJS application. Under no circumstance, should the document uploaded to the platform contain any of this information. This is because the document sent to the peer reviewers must be completely anonymous.

 

Abstract and keywords

All article submissions must contain an abstract (800 characters spaces included) written in the article’s language as well as an English translation. For articles written in English, abstracts should be translated into Spanish. For articles written in any other language, an abstract in Spanish and English must be submitted. Likewise, all submissions must contain around six keywords, which must also be translated following the same system employed with the abstracts.

Both abstracts and keywords will be placed after the title and before the first paragraph of the paper.

 

Citations

Both in-line citations (within parentheses) and well as those placed in footnotes are accepted. In either case, references must consist of the author’s surname(s) (the initial of the author’s first name is optional; if there are two authors, their last names must be connected with the conjunction “and”, not a hyphen) as well as the date of publication and relevant page(s) (do not use the abbreviations p. or pp.; likewise, the journal does not accept f. or ff. for ‘following’).

Examples:

- An expert in Basque, such as Bähr 1947, 42, came to conceive of Aquitanian as a “Vascoceltic” hybrid-language.

- Un buen conocedor del vasco, como Bähr 1947, 42, llegó a concebir el aquitano como una lengua híbrida ‘vascocéltica’.

- ...como sucede en Valentia o en otros lugares coetáneos, como Emporion (Aquilué et al. 2000), Iesso (Guitart, Pera y Grau 2000), Iluro (García, Pujol y Zamora 2000) o Aeso (Payà 2000)...

- Por último, debemos citar dos piezas editadas por D. Fletcher y L. Pérez Vilatela 1994, ambas procedentes de una colección privada.

 

Ancient sources are to be cited using as a general model the Oxford Classical Dictionary (4th edn.) both for abbreviations and for spelling and capitalisation of titles.

 

Bibliographic references

Full bibliographic references are to be placed at the end of a submission under the heading BIBLIOGRAPHY. Entries should be organized alphabetically by author and formatted in the following way:

  1. Short reference consisting of (1) the author’s or authors’ last name(s) (with only the first letter capitalized), (2) the year of publication (a, b, c, etc. are to be used when an author published various articles in the same year that are cited) and (3) a colon.
  2. Initial of the author’s first name followed by his or her last name.
  3. Article title (between double quotation marks) or book title (in italics).
  4. The title of the journal in which an article appears (in italics) followed by the journal number (always in Arabic numerals). If the article is found in a book (such as conference proceedings), “in:” followed by the name(s) of the editor(s) and “(ed.)” or “(eds.)” must be included before the name of the volume. Abbreviations for journals should be taken from the list provided by the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut. In the case that a journal is not included in this list or the journal is not well-known, it is preferable to include its full title.
  5. For journals, the year; for books, place of publication and the year.
  6. Pages (without the abbreviation pp.).

Examples:

- Michelena 1958: L. Michelena, “Hispánico antiguo y vasco”, Archivum 8, 1958, 33-47.

- Tovar 1989: A. Tovar, Iberische Landeskunde, III, Tarraconensis, Baden-Baden 1989.

- Untermann 2003: J. Untermann, “Zur Vorgeschichte der Sprachen des alten Hispanien”, in: A. Bammesberger and Th. Vennemann (eds.), Languages in Prehistoric Europe, Heidelberg 2003, 173-181.

 

Bibliographic references to any of the proceedings of the Coloquios sobre Lenguas y Culturas Paleohispánicas should use the standard complete citation for the proceedings. References included in a Coloquio sobre Lenguas y Culturas Paleohispánicas published in the journal Palaeohispanica will be cited as a paper of the journal, e. g.:

De Hoz 2017: J. de Hoz, “¿Inscripciones ilustradas o imágenes con didascalias? Los vasos de Liria”, Palaeohispanica 17, 2017, 37-54.

 

If a catalogue or work is referred to with a conventional abbreviation, that abbreviation should be included in the bibliography and placed within the larger alphabetical sequence.

Example:

- MLH: J. Untermann, Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum IV: Die tartessischen, keltiberischen und lusitanischen Inschriften, Wiesbaden 1997.

 

Footnotes

Footnotes should be marked in the text using superscript Arabic numerals that are placed after punctuation. Notes are to be placed, in order, at the bottom of the page and should be single-spaced.

Information relative to expressions of gratitude and projects in which papers are framed should not be placed at the beginning of the text, in a footnote; but in a paragraph at the end of the paper.

 

Use of bold, italics, capital letters and underline

1) Bold is only used for: titles and subtitles; the enumeration of paragraphs; the transcription of Paleo-Hispanic inscriptions following the system in Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum.

2) Cursive is used in: titles of cited works; texts in languages different from a contribution’s main language (including Latin abbreviations, such as et al., cf., uid. op. cit., etc.).

When a text is written in italics (for any of the abovementioned reasons) and it contains a word written in a different language, that word is not to be written in italics.

Italics are not to be used in uerbatim quotations, which are marked by the use of double quotation marks, unless they are in a different language than the main text.

 Any punctuation (period, colon, comma or semicolon) placed after a word in italics is not to be written in italics (for example: Corduba, Caesar Augusta and Emerita. Not: Corduba, Caesar Augusta and Emerita.).

3) Underline. Underlined letters are never used except when required by the conventions of epigraphic transcriptions.

 

Use of hyphens

A short hyphen (-) is used for linguistic elements (such as in the N. pl. suffix -ai or the root *ped-) and for separating page numbers.

A long hyphen (—) is used for parenthetic statements. The middle hyphen (–) is never to be used.

 

Use of quotation marks

Single quotation marks (‘ ’) are used to indicate the meaning of a word. For example, -kue which means ‘and’.

Double quotation marks (“ ”) are used in the following circumstances: the titles of articles and book chapters in the bibliography; uerbatim quotations; translations of texts no matter the length; words and expressions used in a technical sense; to signal a figurative meaning or mark irony.

Guillemets (« ») are never to be used.

 

Abbreviations

Authors can use standard abbreviations in Latin, Spanish or the language of the text. Only Latin abbreviations are to be put in italics. When placed within parentheses, abbreviations should be in lowercase (e.g. or fig.) and not in uppercase (E.g. or Fig.). When uncommon abbreviations are used, such as those for Spanish provinces, authors must include a note at the beginning of the article explaining their use.

Abbreviations for measurements must also be in lowercase and cannot be followed by a period: km, cm, etc. Decimals are to be indicated with a comma (0,85) and not in the following manners: 0’85 or 0.85.

 

Sections

Articles can be organized in various sections with titles and subtitles. The following hierarchy should be followed:

1. Title of section (in bold and small caps)
1.1. Subtitle 1
1.1.1. Subtitle 2

 

Figures and photographs

Figures and photographs are to be given in digital format, preferably as a TIFF with 305 DPI resolution or, alternatively, as a JPEG with 300 DPI resolution (minimum).

Such material must be accompanied by a corresponding caption that contains explanatory information and, if applicable, a photo credit.  Such captions are to be numbered in order of appearance and the place where it appears in the text should be indicated. Captions must begin with “Fig.” and the corresponding number. When the figure is mentioned within the text, it should be done in the following manner: "(fig. 1)", always in lowercase.

 

Submission of manuscripts

Only submissions that have been uploaded to the journal’s OJS system will considered. The submission page can be found at web http://ifc.dpz.es/ojs/index.php/palaeohispanica. 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • • The submission has neither been previously published nor is currently under consideration at a different journal (or the submission must include an explanation in “comments to the editor”).
  • • The manuscript is sent as a Microsoft Word document.
  • • Whenever possible, references are given as URLs.
  • • The text employs single-line spacing, has 11-point font and uses italics instead of underlining (except for URLs); all illustrations, figures and tables are found in the appropriate part of the text, not at the end.
  • • The manuscript conforms to the stylistics and bibliographic requirements, which are laid out in Author guidelines, which can be found in this section.
  • The review and publication process is free, we do not charge the author.

Novedades Epigráficas

Los artículos de esta sección dan a conocer inscripciones inéditas. Deberán aportarse, como mínimo, los siguientes datos: (1) Área geográfica; (2) Fecha, circunstancias y lugar de hallazgo, lugar de conservación; (4) Medidas en cm (altura, anchura, grosor; altura de las letras); (5) Transcripción; (6) Fotografía o calco, en su defecto; (7) Referencias bibliográficas; (8) Comentario.

 a) Palaeohispanica’s editorial board

Details concerning the journal’s internal organization can be found at this website.

b) Authors’ responsibilities

As an implicit condition for publishing in Palaeohispanica, authors are expected to adhere to all the ethical and professional principles that are shared across all research fields and academic publications. By submitting a contribution for peer review, potential authors guarantee that their work is original, that it constitutes a significant contribution to its research field and has not been published elsewhere.

All submitted manuscripts ought to contain bibliographic references at the end of the paper as well as an indication of how the research that culminated in the article was funded.

Likewise, authors must agree to incorporate any relevant changes that peer reviewers suggest as well as to include any recommendations that the editorial committee includes in the manuscript’s proofs at the end of the editorial process.

The journal expects its authors, reviewers, editors and staff members to all conduct themselves professionally by treating others with respect and civility. Should any sort of untoward situation arise, such as (self) plagiarism, conflicts of interest or aggressive behaviour on the author’s part, the following actions will be taken:

  • Plagiarism and the republication of articles

Plagiarism is defined as the reproduction of a text or other materials found in different publications without the original source being adequately cited. Accordingly, material can still be plagiarized even when it has been tweaked or paraphrased. Plagiarism constitutes a serious ethical violation; furthermore, there can be legal ramifications for violating an author’s rights in cases where the reproduced material has been previously published. Authors who want to cite published work must do so by including complete references to the original materials and by including any quotations within quotation marks. Graphs and images can only be reproduced with the express permission of the original author and must include a citation below said image or graphic according to the rules laid out on the journal’s website. If a peer reviewer or the editorial board detects any instance of plagiarism (whether of one’s own or another’s work), the manuscript will automatically be disqualified.

  • Conflicts of interest

In most instances an individual who works at the same institution as an author or one of the co-authors is automatically barred from evaluating a potential contribution. The journal’s editors must always be aware of possible conflicts of interest and are required to recuse themselves from any decision-making process, whenever there is even the appearance of a possible conflict of interest.

c) The peer-review process

Palaeohispanica employs peers to evaluate externally all contributions, with this being understood as obtaining the opinion of an established expert over the merits of every potential contribution. In addition to completing the relevant form, reviewers are expected to suggest any pertinent bibliography that was not included in the original version of the manuscript.

Furthermore, the peer-review process is double blind, meaning that both authors’ anonymity as well as the reviewers’ impartiality and independence are guaranteed. Reader reviews will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. As is the case with all respectable research journals, the editors of Palaeohispanicawill not share with a third party the identity of a peer reviewer, the contents of his or her review or any correspondence resulting from the review process. Likewise, reviewers are required to adhere to the same strict standard of confidentiality: neither manuscripts nor the contents of any correspondence between an author and the editors can be shared with a third party without the written and express consent of the journal’s editors.

While strictly speaking authors are not held to the same standards (they can, for instance, solicit advice from co-authors and colleagues as they revise and amend a manuscript in accordance with the recommendations found in a reviewer’s report), the public airing of a reviewer’s report or of the correspondence with the editorial team constitutes untoward behavior. Any author who acts in such a way will automatically forfeit his or her right to the journal’s confidentiality.

  • Aggressive behaviour

Should the editorial committee be made aware of any untoward behaviour on the author’s part towards external reviewers, other authors or the journal’s editors/staff, that author’s submission will immediately be withdrawn from the consideration process.

All participants in the publication process, including editors, authors, peer reviewers, and member’s of the journal’s staff are expected to meet basic standards of professional courtesy and to respect the fundamental rules and guidelines concerning the peer-review and publication processes. Under any circumstance, personal attacks and verbal assault (whether expressed orally or through writing) are completely unacceptable. Accordingly, the journal reserves the right to reject the contribution of any author who repeatedly violates these principles or refuses to cooperate with the editors and reviewers during the normal evaluation and publication processes.

d) Editorial ethics

The editorial team at Palaeohispanica will bring an end to any dishonest research practice by submitting every proposal to a careful review process that will begin before the selection of possible peer reviewers. Should anything questionable be detected, an author will be asked to provide relevant explanations and then be told to review his/her text so as to meet the journal’s quality standards. If an author does not make the requested changes, the manuscript will not be submitted for double-blind peer review and, accordingly, will not be published. The editorial board is always available to discuss and debate with authors any misunderstanding that could have given rise to such a situation.

 e) Copyright and journal access

Journal content falls under the protection of licence Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA. Access the all journal content is open and free of charge.

f) Journal archive

Given that the Institución Fernando el Católico is an established and important publishing house, it is extremely unlikely that access to the journal’s contents could be compromised in anyway within the foreseeable future. The contents of Palaeohispanica will be stored in IFC’s servers even if the journal ceases to be published.

 g) Ownership and management of the journal

The journal Palaeohispanica is edited and run by the institution «Fernando el Católico», an independent entity of the Excelentísima Diputación de Zaragoza.

Names and email addresses submitted to this journal will only be used for tasks related to the journal and will not be shared with any third party or used for any other purpose.
